Rapper/Producer based out of Baltimore, MD D-Law (Damien Lawrence) is achieving his dream of being a musician with hard work, integrity and faith.
The music business is a tough business.
On average a single on a spotify curated playlist of 90k – 700k follower will gather around 9-25k plays in a 2 week time frame. If the single is hot, it can go viral and see 100k plays or more in that same time frame. But 99.9% of singles are never heard despite the artists best efforts.
The odds for making the curated lists are tough as around 280k songs look to be curated in the top 60 of any of the spotify curated playlists. That’s only 60 songs of 280k songs for each list available to post indie music in your category.
This is why it’s important to be ready to hustle and understand that it’s the actions you take long term that bring the bid rewards.
D-Law is one of the artist who understands why looking father ahead is very important.
What do you wish you knew before you started??
When I started on my musical path, I wish I had known how arduous it would be. Being in the music business requires a lot of hard work and dedication. I think it’s disingenuous for some artists to act as though success came overnight or it was easy. Perhaps it was easy for them in a rare case, but I think if something is worth having or achieving, you work hard at it.
Who inspired you ?
As a child, Michael Jackson inspired me to become an artist. His story was always motivating to me. He was a one of a kind performer that paved so many paths for the pop stars of today. He broke barriers, people didn’t even know were up, and demolished what the stereotypical performer was supposed to be. He inspired people to want to be better because we had the power to be.
How did you overcome your most significant obstacle?
The most significant obstacle I felt I had to overcome was completing my music degree. I knew it was important so I was willing do to whatever it took to accomplish that dream.
During school, I worked 3 part-time jobs trying to piece a livable wage together and driving from Baltimore to Virginia 6 days a week to stick with my martial arts lessons. On my way home, I would voice memo record my lyrics as I was working on an EP at the time. It felt like the movie groundhogs day.
I was repeating each day over and over again. I decided to make a drastic change, and I quit the two jobs to enroll in college to pursue my music career and become a better-trained musician and audio engineer.
The rest is history, and I’m thankful for what I have achieved.
